On 29th May 2024, we visited the Labour, Conservative, Green Party and Lib Dem Headquarters, where we handed in a letter to each party leader that was signed by around 60 public figures.Â
In the letter we asked that a commitment to ban trophy hunting becomes a priority for the next government, and called upon the parties to make Year 1 Government Bill commitments to ban hunting trophies.Â
This is a ban supported by 9 out of 10 voters according to recent polls.Â
At the last election, both major parties pledged in their manifestos to ban British hunters bringing home such ‘trophies’. Leaders and MPs of every other party in Westminster said they supported a ban too.Â
A bill was announced in the late Queen’s Speech in 2019. It passed unanimously in the Commons, only to be shockingly thwarted by a handful of Lords in open defiance of the will of the British people.
The date of the general election, Thursday 4 July 2024, coincides almost exactly with the 9th anniversary of the killing of Cecil the lion by an American trophy hunter, an incident that shocked the world. With latest figures suggesting that as many as 100 lions may have been shot by BRITISH trophy hunters since Cecil’s cruel death – the time to act has passed. The next best time to act is now.Â
