With the general election now just days away, the Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting team has been looking through the manifesto commitments of all major parties. Historically, the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) has shown varying degrees of support for animal welfare issues, though their stance on trophy hunting specifically has evolved over time.
In the past, the DUP’s position on trophy hunting wasn’t prominently highlighted in their policies. However, with growing public concern over animal welfare and the impact of trophy hunting on wildlife conservation, the DUP has increasingly aligned with calls for stricter regulations and bans on such practices.
For the 2024 election, the DUP manifesto explicitly addresses this issue:
“The DUP MPs have been united in support for various animal welfare campaigns and bills, including the banning of trophy hunting imports.”
We hope this commitment signifies a clear stance against the importation of hunting trophies, reflecting a broader shift towards prioritising animal welfare.
You can see the whole Manifesto here.
Disappointingly, at the time of writing (28/06/2024, 9:00am), there was no mention of Trophy Hunting in the Reform UK, Lib Dems, SNP or Plaid Party’s 2024 Manifesto’s – however you can read more about the parties who do mention a commitment to banning Trophy Hunting Imports on our blog.
